Housekeeping Week is one of my favorite opportunities to really celebrate the people behind the guest experience.
Your housekeeping team touches almost every part of a guest's stay. They create the room someone walks into after a long travel day. They notice the details. They keep things moving behind the scenes. And they do a lot of work that, when done really well, guests may never even realize happened.
They deserve a week that feels like someone thought about them.
That doesn't mean you need seven days of huge events or an enormous budget. Sometimes you just need a theme to get the ideas flowing.
So, if you're staring at your Housekeeping Week planning sheet wondering what in the world you're going to do this year, here are eight themes to get you started.
Take the whole theme. Borrow one idea. Mix things together. Make it work for your property and, most importantly, your team.
1. Sweet Appreciation
A Little Something Sweet for a Very Deserving Team
This one is warm, colorful and really easy to bring to life.
Think soft pastels, candy shop colors, chocolate, sprinkles and all those little details that make something feel like a treat.
Start one morning with a Sweet Start Breakfast. Put out pastries, donuts or cinnamon rolls with coffee. Add a cute sign and suddenly your regular breakfast has a theme.
Later in the week, bring the celebration to them with a roaming dessert cart. Fill it with chocolates or small treats and take it from floor to floor.
You could even do an afternoon chocolate tasting. Grab a few different chocolates, cut them into tasting pieces and let everyone pick their favorite.
For the little details, think custom chocolate wrappers or treat bags with a "Pure Gratitude" message. Even your regular bottled water can join the party with a themed sticker.
This theme doesn't have to be complicated.
2. Seas the Day: Cruising to Excellence
Smooth Sailing Starts With a Great Crew
If you're in hospitality, the cruise theme practically writes itself.
Go nautical with navy and gold. Add anchors, rope details and a few cruise inspired signs.
Start the morning on the Lido Deck with a continental breakfast. You don't need to completely change what you're serving. Sometimes renaming what you already planned is half the fun.
Later, send out an island hopper snack cart. You could even change the destination on the cart as it moves throughout the property.
Add some maritime or travel trivia during lineup. Hand out little prizes for correct answers.
For your small touches, play with cruise compass designs, captain inspired treat wrappers and anchor stickers.
And please make somebody the captain.
You know you want to.
3. Hospitality All Stars: The MVP Team Behind Every Stay
Put Your Housekeeping MVPs in the Spotlight
Housekeeping is a team sport.
This theme gives you plenty of room to celebrate individual accomplishments while still recognizing that it takes the whole crew to deliver a great stay.
Go bold with varsity colors, sports graphics, trophies and a little retro pop art.
Kick things off with a Pre Game Warmup Breakfast.
During the day, schedule Half Time snack breaks. Bring around drinks and something quick to eat without pulling everyone away from their day for too long.
You could also host an All Star trivia bowl with questions about your property, housekeeping or your team.
Create little MVP moments throughout the week too. Recognize someone for helping another department. Celebrate somebody who always jumps in when needed.
Your decorations can be simple. Trophy graphics, locker inspired treat bags and championship style chocolate wrappers can carry the theme without turning your entire back office into a stadium.
Let your MVPs have their moment.
4. Heart of the Frontier
Celebrating the Heart Behind the Hospitality
I love this theme because it can be playful without becoming a full cowboy costume party.
Think warm rust, wheat, denim, wood and hand drawn Western details.
Start the morning with a Chuckwagon Breakfast. Biscuits immediately belong here. Add some breakfast sandwiches or potatoes and let the theme do the rest.
Later, roll out a trailside snack cart with jerky, granola or other easy grab and go snacks.
For lunch, bring in some heartier comfort food and turn the space into your own little frontier gathering.
Small details can really make this theme. Brown paper treat bags can become rustic provision bags. A regular snack pack becomes a Trailblazer Supply Pack with the right label.
You don't have to cover everything in cowboy hats.
A few thoughtful Western touches will get you there.
5. Glamping: Luxe Under the Stars
Because Housekeeping Knows a Thing or Two About Comfort
Camping, but make it hospitality.
Glamping gives you the cozy feeling of camping with enough polish to still feel special.
Think earthy greens, warm wood, lanterns, botanical details and a little campfire warmth.
Obviously, we need a s'mores bar.
Set out the classics and add a few upgraded options. Different chocolates or flavored marshmallows can make a simple station feel special.
For another snack, try individual charcuterie cups or cones. They're easy to grab and still give you that elevated glamping feeling.
If you have an outdoor area, this could also be a beautiful luncheon theme. Add some string lights and simple greenery.
Little pampering bags fit perfectly here too. Think of them as cozy camper kits with a few small things someone can actually enjoy.
6. Superheroes: Everyday Defenders
Celebrating the Superpowers Behind Every Stay
There are a lot of things housekeeping teams fix before anyone else even knows there was a problem.
That sounds pretty superhero to me.
This theme can be bright, energetic and really fun. Think comic book graphics, action bubbles and bold colors.
Start with a Hero HQ Power Breakfast.
During the day, do rapid dispatch snack deliveries. Take the treats directly to your heroes instead of making everyone come to you.
Trivia works beautifully here too. You can mix traditional superhero questions with questions about your own property.
And have some fun recognizing people's real workplace superpowers.
Maybe someone can turn a room faster than anyone you've ever met. Someone else somehow knows where absolutely everything is.
Those are the things worth celebrating.
Use comic inspired treat wrappers, superhero badges or little "Super Powered" messages throughout the week.
No cape required.
7. Rewind & Recognize
Celebrating the Greatest Hits of Hospitality
This one can be ridiculously fun.
Pick an era or mix a few together. Bring in cassette tapes, vinyl records, boomboxes and some retro colors.
Start with a retro diner breakfast.
Then get the playlist going.
A boombox inspired snack cart gives you an excuse to take music and treats throughout the property. Let different team members request songs while you're making your rounds.
You can also do decades trivia. Music and pop culture are easy places to start.
For your decorations, cassette shaped signs and vintage badges can pull everything together.
You could even make a playlist for the week and let the team help build it.
Housekeeping has been delivering hits all year.
Give them their greatest hits week.
8. Hospitality Royalty: Diamonds & Crowns
Celebrate the Crown Jewels of Your Hotel
If we're going to celebrate them, let's celebrate them.
Hospitality Royalty gives you permission to make Housekeeping Week feel a little fancy.
Think navy, gold, crowns, diamonds and elegant little details.
Start with a Royal Court Breakfast.
Later in the week, set up an afternoon tea inspired break. Put out tea, coffee and a few small pastries or macarons.
Your larger luncheon can become the royal gathering of the week. Add gold details to the tables and make the room feel different from the normal employee dining space.
And don't underestimate crowns.
Put a few out.
Take pictures.
Have fun with it.
You can carry the theme into treat bags and little keepsakes with crown or diamond details without needing everything to be customized.
The people responsible for making rooms sparkle all year deserve a little sparkle of their own.
The Actual Point
You can choose Sweet Appreciation, turn your back hallway into the Lido Deck or even crown your Hospitality Royalty but the theme isn't what your team is going to remember most.
They're going to remember how you made them feel.
Choose something that fits your team. Think about the people you're actually celebrating. Work around their schedules. Include your overnight employees. Make sure the celebration reaches the people who aren't standing in the room when leadership happens to be there.
And don't get so caught up trying to create a picture perfect Housekeeping Week that you forget why you're doing it.
The decorations are fun. The food is fun. I obviously love a good theme, but recognition is the point.
Whatever theme you choose this year, make sure your housekeeping team leaves the week knowing one thing:
We see what you do and it's all enough!
